The Khmer New Year 2002

Khmer New Year funThe Khmer New Year is celebrated April 14-16 this year but the fun and excitement starts long before that. The Khmer people, like many other simpler cultures that aren't jaded by big-screen TV, SUVs, backyard pools, etc., really enjoy the holidays. For them it's an actual break from a grueling, difficult life, and they can really celebrate and enjoy it. Here two deaf men begin to get into the spirit of things!

Rachel Smith, one of the Maryknoll lay missioners, has been instrumental in setting up a group home to enable some of the children to live a more normal existence in a family-style setting. Today as part of the new year, they took an outing to Kean Svay, a Khmer-style park and picnic area. Here, one of the two girls at the group home, shows her excitement as the time for departure nears.
